A good laugh for Monday // Bingley

[wpvideo enhKgMTL] [wpvideo QmCNiSyq]

A little laugh for your Monday morning--We love taking Bingley on the prairie path by my parent's house. Sometimes he has so much energy one of us will run ahead and try to wear him out. WELL, he doesn't like to leave anyone behind, so he flops over and won't budge until we all catch up. It's SO FUNNY!! In a few of the videos you can see him look back and then plop over! :) :) He's the cutest! We are obsessed! :) Hope you had a great weekend! I can't believe it's October already. xo

Fall Moody Board

fall_inspiration_claire My sister Claire is the fashion queen in our family. She has amazing style and her Pinterest is insanely beautiful! She's a curator at heart :) I asked her to put together a fall fashion inspired mood board for us (above). Fall has the best colors. This past weekend I drank apple cider and pumpkin spiced coffee...I also ate pumpkin doughnuts, pear-spiced yogurt, an apple-oat scone AND a caramel apple!!!! Seriously a good weekend :) Fall is HERE!! I'm ready to layer up and wear booties (just hope it doesn't get too cold, too quickly!)!!

I used this gluten free scone mix to make the apple oat scones. I got the mix at World Market along with a blueberry mix. The best ever. Couldn't be easier either--just add oil and water. YUM! I'd definitely recommend it!

Cheers to cozy sweaters, pumpkin pie, apple picking, You've Got Mail, scarves, football games, chai tea, apple cider & flannel! ;)

Soren Kierkegaard on Love

"You have loved us first, O God, alas! We speak of it in terms of history as if You have only loved us first but a single time, rather than that without ceasing You have loved us first many times and everyday and our whole life through. When we wake up in the morning and turn our soul toward You - You are there first - You have loved us first; if I rise at dawn and at the same second turn my soul toward You in prayer, You are there ahead of me, You have loved me first. When I withdraw from the distractions of the day and turn my soul toward You, You are the first and thus forever. And yet we always speak ungratefully as if You have loved us first only once."

Bingley / July2014 / HAPPY FRIDAY

Caught in action! The cutest Bingley you'll ever see! :) Happy Friday! Happy Friday! xo Grant and I will be gone in Colorado the next two weeks savoring the last bit of summer!! Have a great weekend!

DIY // easy marbled terracotta planter

ProgressPot sharpies

marbledPotskullCactus On Wednesday my friend Jane came over to hang out and craft. We looked at a bunch of random DIY things, but in the end she made some neon tassels and I used paint pens to create a marble design on a terracotta planter. :) I've been meaning to repot a handful of plants that I had and terracotta planters are so cheap. I was inspired by this picture on instagram! It was so easy and I love the final result. The only supplies you need are Sharpie paint pens and a terracotta planter! :) Happy Friday!

SNACKS // healthiest, simplest, funnest snack around

watermelon_YOURS_EVER For the 4th of July my mom made the cutest snacks--watermelon stars! So unexpected and fun! I've been meaning to post it and I figured even though I'm late, summer isn't over yet!!!! This cute idea would be perfect for any time of the year really: a fun breakfast addition or a kid's party or play date or just for FUN :) Good for adults too! :)

Directions: 1. // slice watermelon (or another kind of melon) into 1 in thick round slices 2. // press the cookie cutter into the round slice, carefully press out the shape 3. // discard the rind, eat the extra pieces! :)

You can find unique cookie cutters on etsy for cheap! Below are a few I thought were pretty cool. Also, I don't have kids, but I think any kid would love their name spelled out in watermelon letters, right?! Everyone loves seeing their own name :) :) Batman and lightning bolts are pretty sweet too!

Randolf Street Market, Chicago // NEW RUG!

newRug This square, colorful, rug couldn't be more perfect for our little dining nook. It makes me so happy!!! Seems like it was made for the space. I bought it on Sunday at the Randolph Street Market. The gals from Amelia Jane Vintage gave me a deal. I always get e-mails about the market and have wanted to go and on Sunday we actually went!! Yeaaaa!! :) Summer is all about making things happen!

A few lovely things above!^^^ eames chair & sputnik chandelier // bertoia chair // pretty aztec tufted sofa // turqouise striped vintage camper // ...I also loved these mirrored panels below!

>>our little place is slowly coming together! I haven't shopped much, but I couldn't pass up the rug. All you need are a few pieces to pull a room together! :) Still in progress, but it's been a lot of fun! ...maybe if we stay here long enough I'll be able to change that light fixture! :) >> next up: art on the walls!

 ^^^ love these two. xoxo ^^^ PS! I updated / S I M P L I F I E D my about page! :) and I added Bingley to the front page of the blog! He's just tooooo cute!

Apartment // pattern & color love

apartment2C We've been in our new place for a little over a month. Things are finally starting to come together. I added more color to our place than I had invisioned from my initial moodboard...I love leather and neutral colors, but I want to work with what I already have and I have quite a few colorful things that I love! So, I'm going with it! :) I haven't really shopped much for our place, but I did splurge on a little Moroccan pillow! More apartment love to come.

The Solitude of the Soul // The Art Institute of Chicago

"The thought is the eternally present fact that however close we may be thrown together by circumstances...we are unknown to each other." Lorado Taft, sculptor

I went to the Art Institute recently with my mom and my friend, Grace and I discovered a beautiful sculpture that I don't think I'd ever noticed before. I love unfinished art and while this piece is actually finished the four figures emerging from this huge rough looking marble block is so striking to me. My friend Grace likes to stand in front of a painting or sculpture for a long time and really look at it. She said that she preferred to look at fewer pieces of artwork and remember them rather than move quickly through many galleries. Such wisdom. We spent time in only 3 galleries, but I discovered several pieces of art that I hadn't noticed before (and I've been to the Art Institute many times!) :)

As you can see above, the title of the piece is called, The Solitude of the Soul. Such an incredible portrayal of deep human emotion. The sculptor, Lorado Taft, was a professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for 20 years and he created many sculptures for the city of Chicago. We're so lucky to have such an amazing collection at the Art Institute.

Beautiful hybrid china

hybridChina CTRLZAK_Hybrid_draw3

I came across these beautiful hybrid china plates last week in an e-mail from Domino. "Art and design studio CTRLZAK have launched a collection of tableware where half of each piece resembles traditional Chinese porcelain and the other side features a European design." I'm not one for hanging plates on the wall, but I can imagine a few of these dinner plates would look so cool! I love all the different patterns and colors. I wonder if this could be a DIY project?? How do you go about slicing china in half and welding it back together so perfectly?...I should probably just stick to painting furniture and making tassels :) but I love this idea. They also have tea cups, cake stands, and trays!

The cutest Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier you've ever seen!

Meet our baby BING BING! He's a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier puppy. We got him last month. "We" as in my sisters got him (not Grant and I), but he's become our family dog :)  He is so much fun! He literally "bings" around hopping through the yard, hopping on chairs and up and down the stairs. As you can see from the first picture, we named him after Mr. Bingley in Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. If you haven't watched the BBC 6 hour Pride & Prejudice movie, YOU SHOULD! We love it and Mr. Bingley is such a kind character in the story: loves everyone, super sweet...so fitting for Bing! :)

Bingley's hypoallergenic so he doesn't shed (which is awesome) and he'll end up being around 40-45 lbs. He's grown so much already! Since we got him last month he's about doubled in size and gained 4lbs. What a stinkin cutie. I'm sure he'll be making plenty appearances here on the blog. Just look at that face!!! Ahhhhhhh...BingCollage

binginShirtSorry for the Bingley overload, but I just had to!! :) :)

Parisians // Eiffel Tower

dressParisian So, I've been MIA for the past month because it's SUMMER and we MOVED and it's SUMMER! =) but I'm back and wanted to share a few of my favorite French inspired links, because today is Bastille Day!

When Grant and I visited my parents in Dubai we had a layover in Paris, so we went into the city and we ran into Jordan Ferney of Oh Happy Day! She was so sweet. Here's some advice from Jordan: What to Bring to Paris.

Also, another witty article by: Garance Dore on dressing like Emmanuel Alt (the beautiful editor of French Vogue, below).

And finally a bit of inspiration and a few things I never knew from Seth Godin! xo

Seth Godin: Lessons from the Eiffel Tower

  • It was designed at home, on the kitchen table...
  • by someone who didn't get their name on it
  • Never been done before, not guaranteed to get built or to work
  • It was criticized by hundreds of leading intellectuals and cultural experts
  • It wasn't supposed to last very long
  • It's designed to be an icon, it's not an accident
  • People flock to it because it's famous
  • You can sketch a recognizable version of it on a napkin

Your turn to build one. Happy Bastille Day.

P.S. My family (not Grant and I) got a PUPPY about a month ago!!! I've been meaning to post some pictures of him because he is THE CUTEST...tomorrow! xo

Design // Matthew Knowles joins the ranks as a favorite

Along with Ryan Korban, Matthew Knowles has become one of my favorite designers. One look at his studio apartment above and I fell in LOVE. The Renaissance/traditional feel of his artwork, the wall color mixed with modern touches like the invisible bookshelves (first photo), the leopard pillow, the black mats in his framed artwork= p e r f e c t! Studio apartment? I'll take it! =) haha..Like Ryan Korban he uses different textures and lots of artwork. I'm excited to put together a gallery wall in our apartment. I included the top Knowles picture in my past apartment inspiration board on masculine style. Isn't he so talented?!  xo

dad&G weddingM&D

When I was 11 my dad put my sister and I on a plane from the Middle East to Chicago all by ourselves! Living in the Middle East as expats we travelled back and forth regularly and one summer my mom and younger sister flew ahead of us and my older sister and I followed. I remember it was really exciting and scary flying home alone! My dad always believed in us, gave us a lot of different opportunities, encouraged us and cheered for us until he lost his voice at swim meets (losing his voice at all of them)! He’s the hardest worker I know. Pod, you’re the best!!! We love you. XOXO

Spaces / Masculine Style

Grant and I are moving at the end of the month, so I've been filling my head with inspiration, gathering my favorite colors, textures and spaces. I love different textures and mostly neutral colors. I was able to find this docksta table on Craigslist for $40!! AHHH! I was so excited. Grant picked it up in the city and it'll be the perfect size for an aparment/breakfast nook. I like a masculine look. Another one of my favorite rooms below from Lonny and a few tips on designing a gender neutral space here! Michelle+Adams+leather+chaise+linen+couch+mIJkShtXJU1l
